To provide technical, operational and administrative leadership for the efficient and effective performance of the fire safety functions of the Service.

1. Provides inputs for the formulation of policies.
2. Directs activities of all Regional Safety Departments through Regional Commanders to ensure that Fire Safety Officers or Inspectors across the country carry out activities that inure to the achievement of annual targets set by the Chief Fire Officer.
3. Ensures the implementation, monitoring and evaluation of programmes and activities of the Directorate.
4. Ensures the effective and efficient management of the human, material and financial resources of the Directorate.
5. Ensures that public fire safety education is carried out in the country.
6. Ensures the conduct of public fire safety education in the country
7. Ensures that fire safety inspections and audits are regularly conducted at public places of assembly.
8. Ensures the conduct of fire safety inspections and audits at public places
9. Represents the Chief Fire Officer on matters relating to fire safety in the country and submit reports and briefings promptly.
10. Ensures that the Directorate provides technical advice for building plans in respect of machinery and structural layouts to facilitate escape from fire, rescue operations and fire management.
11. Ensures the review of structural plans for the granting of permit.
12. Ensures the preparation of the budget and work plan of the Directorate.
13.  Ensures the preparation of annual and periodic reports of the Directorate.
14.  Ensures the implementation of Performance Management System within the Directorate.
15.  Supervises and appraises immediate Subordinates.
